Multi-generations in the Workplace

The generation gap is the greatest and most complex it has ever been. Never before, have organizations needed to both manage age-diverse employees and serve an age-diverse customer base. Just as gender and ethnic diversity can lead to conflict and miscommunication, so can generational diversity. When your managers and employees understand how generational differences affect you, your workplace and your customers, you can:
Leveraging and valuing generation diversity and creating generation synergy can impact the bottom line, improve productivity, and enhance the customer experience. For example, just understanding communication preferences can impact how quickly and positively each generation responds to requests:
  • Traditionals (1923-1943/46): "Talk to me one-on-one."
  • Baby Boomers (1943/46-1964): "Let's have a meeting!"
  • Gen X (1964-1980): "Send me an email."
  • Gen Y (1980-2000): "Txt me."

So What Makes Someone an Expert?

What do we mean by "expert"? Here are the criteria I have decided to use. For me, an expert is someone who:
  • Has long, deep, provable, hands-on experience. Sure, someone just out of school or recently credentialed might be very good, but I want to see proof. Lots of it, and I want it all related to what they are selling.
  • Has a track record of success with solid testimonials from people similar to me. I want to know what my peers and colleagues think of their work.
  • Is a player in a big pond. Many faux experts are big fish in very tiny ponds. I want to work with someone who has what it takes to compete and succeed in a large pond.
  • Has a robust, relevant social media presence, especially on LinkedIn. For business, LinkedIn is the big pond. Faux experts tend to avoid LinkedIn because they know they can't compete in that league.
  • Has a website and blog that are credible and consistent with who they say they are and that are kept current and updated regularly. A sad, old website or blog that hasn't been updated since it went live is, to me, the mark of a faux expert.
I will probably add to my criteria as time goes on. I would like to know your ideas, what you do to vet "experts," and what has been your experience with faux experts. Please share!

When Did We Stop Being Gracious

When we talk about being gracious, what do we mean? i checked the meaning at and found this: "Characterized by or showing kindness and courtesy."
Being gracious distinguishes us, especially in situations when it is challenging to do so. Road rage is an all-to-common example. People can't make mistakes without someone taking offense rather than graciously acknowledging that "things happen" and letting it go.
Life is not a race where we need to elbow each other aside to get ahead. Let's face it--we are all headed to same end game. Why not make the journey with grace?

Your Blog Needs a Strategy to Succeed

Blogging for business requires a strategy to be successful. Every blog should be focused on bringing your business. Think of each post as if it were an invitation to your business and give your readers a reason for wanting to know more.
  • Choose a goal for the post. Let's say you want to demonstrate how you achieve results for clients.
  • Choose a client story that illustrates this, for example, how you helped a client save thousands of dollars on their taxes or get in shape for swimsuit season or lower their blood pressure.
  • Tell the story in your post.
